If you don't already have a large library of music, Tidal can supply you with an instant deep catalog. Integration of Tidal with Roon was fairly seamless, although I encountered some metadata quirks that, presumably, Roon will address in updates. but that's a different review.įor $19.99/month, Tidal provides streaming service at CD resolution of a growing library of songs that, at time of writing, numbered 25 million. That said, changing to a different DAC did change the sounds of both. But in comparisons of PCM files of CD resolution or higher, up to 24-bit/96kHz, and with the Sooloos and Roon systems using the same DAC, nothing stood out. Via S/PDIF, Sooloos doesn't support DSD, so I couldn't use that file format as a basis of comparison. I could hear no differences in sound quality, good, bad, or indeterminate. Nonetheless, I connected my Roon laptop to my main system via USB and, using the same albums as in my Sooloos collection, listened intently. (Audirvana and JRiver partisans: Have at it in the comments section when this review appears on !) Changing a DAC's filter setting has a greater influence on sound. It didn't used to be this way, but it is now: When I've properly set up Amarra, Audirvana, JRiver, Sooloos, VLC, etc., on my Mac and compared them through the same DAC, I've been hard-pressed to hear meaningful differences. These days, I find that most music-playing apps sound so alike, the differences aren't worth sweating. To get started, you simply pick one or more tracks, then press the Radio button: Roon moves you around related music with a curated stream. The Radio feature uses metadata to create, in the words of Roon Labs, a "personalized station," in a manner similar to Pandora Radio's automated music-recommendation engine. :).And once you start somewhere, Roon can keep the show going until you pull the plug. Also, their motto is "Hear the Difference". Trust me or try it yourself ( they offer a free trial). As I've said before, no real rival in terms of sound output quality. Audirvana: The best sound you can get from streaming (IMHO) includes Remote control software.Īudirvana is simply "install-and-play-anything" kind of SW and even with native DAC in Macbook Air (early 2015), it sounds absolutly amazing.THEIR HIGH RESOLUTION DIGITAL AUDIO PLAYER INTEGRATES THE TIDAL LIBRARY WITH NUMEROUS USER CONTROL OPTIONS FOR MQA,UPSAMPLING, VOLUME LEVELING AND DAC - AUDIRVĀNA STUDIO. Tidal rewrote the PC program's playback, thoughts? There's also Audirvana and if you have your music on a Plex server, Plexamp is a really nice player. I don't have Roon, but perhaps that's part of what that service provides. I have thought it would be great if Apple Music or Marvis Pro could integrate all its rich detail into their interfaces, but they don't currently do so. Music Brainz - I don't actively use this resource, I usually go to Discogs or AllMusic. Help an old man with the LastFM, AppleMusic, BrainzPicard, Marvis big picture? Welcome to the rabbit hole, next step for lyrics (amongst many other significant benefits) is. It's pricing and mobile limitations are disqualifications for me, but it's tagging is simply phenomenal. IOS 16.3 Code Reveals Apple Continues to Work on Classical Music App It’s not cheap, and it takes some effort to fix some bad source data, but I’ve found it very rewarding and get a ton of enjoyment exploring my library now. It’ll do things like link covers and live performances of the same song together, or let you group multiple issues of the same album and switch between them. Roon handles metadata and relationships between entities the least bad of anything I’ve tried.
